Core Minutes is a combination of simple rehabilitative exercises and stretches based on the Pilates Method. The exercises are designed to stretch and strengthen the muscles we use when sitting at a desk, and are therefore performed from a seated position.
The Pilates method is often referred to as core training - focussing on back extensors and the abdominal musculature, in particular the transversus abdominis. The goal of core strengthening without straining peripheral joints is realised through concentrating on (1) coordinating breathing with movement; (2) scapular, pelvic and ribcage stabilisation during the abdominal movements and (3) head and cervical spine placement to avoid neck strain. (Ref: Neil A. Segal MD etc al, The effects of pilates training on flexibility & body composition, Arch Phys Med Rehabil, Vol 85, Dec 2004).
The exercises are written and demonstrated by a qualified Pilates teacher with over 15 years of teaching experience. They are delivered in video format with written instruction. The exercises and stretches are gentle and use only gravity and other muscles for resistance.
Core Minutes is a preventative tool for people who work at a desk all day. It is not suitable for anyone with a pre-existing MSD unless guided otherwise by their medical practitioner.
